Cookie policy
This page lists every cookie claimthenight.com can set, what each one does, how long it lasts and how to accept, decline or change your decision. Nothing optional is loaded before you choose.
This document is an informational template. Have it checked by a lawyer in New Zealand before you rely on it.
1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a site asks your browser to store, so that something can be remembered between pages or between visits. Similar technologies do the same job by other means: localStorage, for instance, keeps a value in your browser without sending it back to the server with every request. This page covers both.
2. The three categories
- Necessary. Without them the site does not work: the session that carries your enquiry form, the token that protects the form from being submitted by a third-party page, and the record of your cookie decision. They never enable analytics or advertising storage.
- Analytics. Aggregated statistics about which pages and which programmes get read, so we know which parts of the catalogue are worth expanding. Off unless you switch them on.
- Marketing. Advertising measurement and personalisation, which may involve Google as a recipient. Off unless you switch them on.
3. The files
| Name | Purpose | Duration | Category |
|---|---|---|---|
claimthenight_cookie_choice |
Stores your cookie decision so you are not asked again. SameSite=Lax. |
180 days | Necessary |
claimthenight_session |
Server session: keeps the anti-forgery token and the values you typed if the form comes back with an error. SameSite=Lax, HttpOnly. |
Until you close the browser | Necessary |
csrf_token (inside the session) |
A one-time value that proves the enquiry was sent from this site. Stored in the session, not as a separate cookie. | Session | Necessary |
claimthenight-theme |
Remembers whether you chose light or dark mode. This is localStorage, not a cookie: it stays in your browser and is never sent to us. |
Until you clear your browser storage | Necessary |
| Google analytics and advertising cookies | Only if you consent. Measurement of visits and, for marketing, advertising personalisation. Not loaded while this site is run without advertising tags. | As set by Google, typically up to 24 months | Analytics / Marketing |
At the time of writing, no Google tag is installed on this site, so in practice only the necessary entries above are used. The consent mechanism is in place because it has to be working before any advertising or analytics is switched on.
4. Google Consent Mode v2
Before you make a choice, all four consent signals are denied:
ad_storage: deniedanalytics_storage: deniedad_user_data: deniedad_personalization: denied
When you choose, the signals are updated to match: the analytics category controls analytics_storage, and the marketing category controls ad_storage, ad_user_data and ad_personalization. Declining keeps everything denied, and your decision is still saved so you are not asked on every page.
5. Accepting, declining and changing your mind
The banner on your first visit offers three equally weighted buttons: accept, decline, settings. Declining is one click, exactly like accepting. The settings panel lets you turn the two optional categories on or off individually; both start off.
Afterwards, the Cookie settings button in the footer reopens the panel on any page. You can also delete cookies in your browser settings, and block them there entirely. If you block the necessary ones, the enquiry form may stop working.
If JavaScript is switched off in your browser, the settings panel cannot open. In that case nothing optional is loaded at all: no analytics or marketing cookies are set, and the site works in full without them.
